Frey: Part 1 – The Architectural Envoy Premiere February 18, 2018

Design Onscreen’s new film, Albert Frey:- The Architectural Envoy (Part 1) will premiere at the Camelot Theater during Palm Springs Modernism Week on February 18, 2018. More information will be made available soon.

Albert Frey, the unpretentious Swiss-born mid-20th century architect, aided in the introduction of Corbusian-influenced modernism to the United States and through an innate curiosity of the American landscape, developed an extraordinary design style, blending industrial techniques and a love of nature.

Part 1 (of a 2 part series) explores Albert’s early life and work in Europe to his New York architectural accomplishments in the 1930s.

Journeyman Architect: The Life and Work of Donald Wexler

With opening remarks made by Bechtler President and CEO John Boyer, Journeyman Architect: The Life and Work of Donald Wexler will be featured on October 26, 2017  at The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art as part of the Modernism + Film program.  The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art is dedicated to the celebration and analysis of the strongest aspects of mid- century modernism. This is the second screening hosted by the program in Charlotte, North Carolina.

2017 Architecture and Design Film Festival

Design Onscreen was honored to be at the 2017 Architecture and Design Film Festival in Tulsa, Oklahoma.  Sponsored by The Tulsa Foundation for Architecture, the ADFF is the largest film festival in the United States showcasing Architecture and Design.  Over 4 days in April, 20 films were screened.   The Nature of Modernism: E. Stewart Williams, Architect by director Jake Gorst was featured on Sunday.  Design Onscreen’s Kirk Brown and Jill Wiltse, producers of the film, hosted a Q&A following the screening.

MILANO DESIGN FILM FESTIVAL will showcase the best in recent films on design through a variety of special screening events – each including discussions with dynamic designers, architects, filmmakers, magazines, architecture/design schools directors and pundits from Italy and around the globe, 3 – 6 October 2013 (4 DAYS), at Apollo spazioCinema, Galleria De Cristoforis 3, Milano.

MiCue Milano Design and U.S nonprofit foundation Design Onscreen, with the patronage of the Comune di Milano, are proud to present this first-ever series of film events in Milano.

MILANO DESIGN FILM FESTIVAL will feature receptions, onstage discussions, audience Q&As and music, as well as the participation of Milano’s design experts and distinguished faculty and students. Each event will be geared to bring together, entertain and challenge the Milano design community. And unlike most film festivals, our goal is to make as many events as possible free and open to the public. All the Design Schools of Milan will be involved.

We are working to bring to the Festival the best and latest movies of Architecture and Design made ​​in the world.

5th Annual Design Onscreen Denver Film Series, September 5-28, 2013; Sie FilmCenter

Design Onscreen and the Denver Film Society team up again to present the 5th Annual Architecture + Design Film Series in Denver. The Film Series will showcase about 14 films over 12 days in September. At least 11 of these films are Colorado Premieres and have never been publicly screened in Colorado before this Film Series.

Films tentatively in the line up include:

Fallingwater: Frank Lloyd Wright’s Masterwork (Colorado Premiere) which features interviews from his apprentices, the son of an industrialist who commissioned a vacation home over a waterfall, and rare home movie footage; (view trailer here)


Fortuny and the Magic Lantern (Colorado Premiere) about the beautiful creations of Spanish designer Mariano Fortuny, which are inspired by the Orient and the Renaissance; and


The Human Scale (Colorado Premiere)–a thought-provoking film about Danish architect and professor who challenges us to design the modern urban city in a way that takes into account human needs and intimacy, rather than repelling it.

We will post the full schedule on the Design Onscreen website, and individual tickets and film passes will be sold through the Denver Film Society (www.DenverFilm.org) in the coming weeks. Films often sell out, so buy your tickets online as soon as they are sold. All films will be screened at the Sie FilmCenter, 2510 East Colfax Avenue, Denver.

This documentary explores the work of the region’s best post-war architects, including Albert Frey, Wallace Harrison, Frank Lloyd Wright, Horace Gifford, Marcel Breuer, Andrew Geller, Charles Gwathmey, Barbara and Julian Neski, and others. Featuring interviews with architects and historians, as well as friends, families and clients of these influential designers, the film shows that these modernists’ best work is often under threat.

Design Onscreen will be represented at the Architecture and Design Film Festival in New York City on October 18th-21st.  In its 4th season, ADFF will host 2 screenings of Modern Tide: Midcentury Architecture on Long Island. The 10/19 showing @ 7:15pm features Q&A with Jake Gorst and Tomas Rossant; the 10/21 @ 5:15pm showing features Q&A with Jake Gorst and Heather Leja.

Denver 2012 Architecture and Design Film Series – September 6-28

Celebrate the best in films on architecture and design at eleven screening events, featuring 13 films, including discussions with dynamic filmmakers, architects and design experts, plus five receptions hosted by Denver’s favorite eateries, retail stores and galleries.

Films will screen on Thursdays at 7pm ($25 DFS members/20 non-members, including receptions), Fridays at 4:30pm ($12/$10), and Saturdays at 2pm ($12/10) during the first three weeks of the series, with final screenings at 7pm on Thursday, Sept. 27 and Friday, Sept. 28 ($25/20, including receptions).

Series Passes ($90 members/$110 non-member) are also available.

Each week brings a new focus: Modern Week (Sept. 6-8); Global Reach Week (Sept. 13-15), Icons Revisited Week (Sept. 20-22) and Sustainability Week (Sept. 27-28) with a special closing event in conjunction with the US Passive House Conference.
